Weekly Prompt Story: Shoe

http://oneadayuntilthedayidie.com/?p=26829

Shoes
By Christopher Munroe

I’m never more nervous than when things go well.

I’m always waiting for the other shoe to drop.

Which isn’t healthy, it isn’t normal, I know it isn’t, and it robs me of my ability to enjoy the good things, and there are plenty of good things in my life!

I can’t help it, it’s just who I am.

Even my victories I find myself unable to enjoy…

For example, if all went well, by the time you hear this I’ll be done my NaNoWriMo draft.

And yet, as of writing this, I’m kind of still freaked out about it…

Weekly Prompt Story: An Unpublished Labor of Hercules

http://oneadayuntilthedayidie.com/?p=25980

Mythology
By Christopher Munroe

He did NaNoWriMo, you know.

Yes, he was there, writing 50k words, crafting his novel.

He finished, too. Finished, and was pleased. His story was everything he hoped it would be, yet even after edits he couldn’t figure out what to do with it.

Every publishing house said no, called it unrealistic in spite of every word being true, and that was when he realized his autobiography had no home in the literary world.

He’d wait for somebody else to write his story, however they might change it.

And so, his real life went unread.

The unpublished labor of Hercules…

Aftermath (NaNoWriMo Part V)

I’m not sure I even remember who I used to be.

At some point, everything just sort of fell by the wayside, friends, hobbies, interests. I used to have a girlfriend. Do I still have a girlfriend?

I really ought to look into that.

I’ve never been more checked-out at work in my life, it’s a wonder I’ve still got a job.

But moreover, I’ve watched myself, the part of me that I consider Me, chipped away, piece by piece, judged and found unnecessary to the task at hand, until all I have left, all that I am, is hands on a keyboard, eyes on a screen, and the worlds I’ve created inside my own mind.

Worlds of words, in which I am the undisputed master.

Because I’m done. I’m finished my draft.

Thirty-one days, fifty thousand words.

A victory well earned.

And now: To try and pick up the pieces of my shattered social life and psyche, and see if I can put them back together again…

Motivation (NaNoWriMo Pt. III)

…and then, one day, you’ll hit the wall.

Maybe you’ve hit it already, at some point in your creative life. It’s likely that you have, everyone does sooner or later. If you haven’t, congratulations, you’ve got something uniquely horrible to look forward to.

The words will dry up, your mind will empty, and you’ll stagger to the nearest mirror to take a good, hard look at yourself and ask “Who the fuck do you think you’re kidding?”

The reflection will have no good answer for you. It is, after all, merely a reflection.

You’ll be tempted, in that moment, to collapse into self-pity, and when that temptation comes, by all means, succumb if you want.

It’s your Self, after all, if you want to pity it that’s your prerogative. I’d never tell you what to do in your darker moments.

That’s private time. And I’m not the boss of you.

If a moment of self-pity is something you feel, deep within yourself, that you need, then take that moment. Collapse into a well of doubt, and fear, and misery, and let negativity wash over you like a river, dragging you under and out to sea.

Take your moment. You’ve hit the wall, it’s not like the time was going to be spent productively anyway. Feel small, and stupid, and worthless, like you’ll never accomplish anything.

But only for a moment.

And once that moment’s done, pull yourself back together, go back to your novel, and get the fuck back to work.

Ideas (NaNoWriMo Part II)

Ideas are easy to come by. They’re out there in the world, laying about, waiting to be picked up by an enterprising mind.

You can find them everywhere you look, if you’re paying attention.

All you need to do is see the world as it is, wonder “what if it was other?” and proceed.

It’s exactly that simple.

No, I have no sympathy for people who can’t come up with ideas. Ideas are commonplace, if you’re not having ideas you’re not thinking.

It’s translating those ideas into words.

Words are harder.

Words take discipline.

And that’s where the problems arise...

NaNoWriMo (Part I)

….and then came NaNoWriMo.

I was excited, yes, but moreso I was ready. More ready than I’d ever been for anything in my life.

I’d wished my friends goodbye for the month, booked time off work, even had my cable and internet cut for the duration that I might do my work free from any distractions.

My fridge was stocked with thirty-one days worth of food, so I’d have no good reason to ever leave the house, and the numbers of two pizza places and my favorite Chinese delivery restaurant were programmed into my phone, for the days when I couldn’t tear myself away from the page even long enough to cook. Within my self-imposed literary exile, I reigned supreme…

…and, most importantly, I’d procured one hundred twenty four tabs of LSD.

Two for every morning.

Two for every night.

I had a book to write. A simple story of a man eating LSD in isolation, trying to write a novel and going slowly mad.

And nothing would stop me.

Nothing…

NaNoWriMo Part Two

…and then, as one, we finished, stood, brushed ourselves off and thought about leaving the house.

It was over for another year, and though the schedule had been punishing, we’d somehow managed it.

Some of us had hit 50k, and glowed at the victory. Others hoped to do better next year, but either way we were done, and as one we looked around us, in awe at the freedom and possibilities now open to us and, in one voice from every corner of the globe, asked the same question:

What did I used to do for fun before this month?

NaNoWriMo

And then came NaNoWriMo, and lo did the fiction blogging community dry up and blow away like dust on the breeze…

Everyone wrote, true, hunched over laptops around the world desperately trying to expel the words that dwelt within them, but all attention had been turned to novels.

Many blogs went fallow for the month, but my Friday Flashes kept arriving, like clockwork, right on time, plunging into the emptiness.

Not that I was there to notice how little was going on. I was working on my own NaNo.

I’d prewritten my stories, you see, to stand in my place…

No Sunday Story?!?!?!??!

Due to there being no episode of 100 Word Stories Sunday prompt episode this week due to lack of a host (get better, Laurence!) There is no Sunday prompt story this week. Very sad. Instead, he said, seamlessly segueing, why not check out my new ebook?

On October 5th of last year, the escalators at West Edmonton Mall shut down simultaneously due to what was believed to be a series of mechanical failures, stranding thousands on the second floor. By the time a rescue operation could be organized and mounted, nearly everyone on the mall’s upper level had been killed, and to this day few people, if any, understand what really happened during the period when that area of the mall was cut off from the rest of the world.

My name is Christopher Munroe, and this is the story of what happened to me. This isn't the whole story of what happened at West Edmonton Mall that horrible day, but it is my story. This is the story of the people I met, the things I had to endure, and the lengths I went to, to survive... a broken escalator.

Broken Escalator is a surrealist horror novel by Christopher Munroe, where mechanical failure spirals quickly out of control and human nature is discovered to be by turns nobler and more brutal than anyone could imagine. Or at least, than anyone would like to admit…

Available, to those of you who didn't already know, via Smashwords even as we speak, and other eBook retailers and in audio soon. Check it out!

For the record...

...this blog will continue to update during NaNoWriMo. I have #fridayflash stories, albeit extremely short ones, in the can so as to keep #fridayflash going, and prompt stories are 100 words so I'll be keeping up with them too. This won't take an enormous amount of my mental energy, obviously, since I'm expecting NaNoWriMo to take a lot out of me, BUT I do take this thing seriously too, so I'll find things to update it with even as I'm busy NaNo-ing.

Also, if you don't know what NaNoWriMo is, here's my information so you can keep me honest about the work I need to do...
